Description
Opening January 13, 2020 through April 9, 2020: Mountain Heritage Center gallery at Hunter Library 161, M – F 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
Photographs of Latino North Carolinians working, worshiping and celebrating will be highlighted in an exhibit hosted by the Mountain Heritage Center at Western Carolina University. Al Norte Al Norte: Latino Life in North Carolina, opening Monday, January 13, 2020 is the Center’s first exhibit to focus on the state’s Latino community, and also the museum’s first bilingual exhibit. With English and Spanish descriptions, Al Norte Al Norte features 51 compelling images by Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist José Galvez. From business owners and farm laborers to grandparents and kindergarten graduates, the photographs capture the daily life of Latino North Carolinians. Many Latinos have made North Carolina their home since the 1980’s, in search of better economic opportunity. Shot over 10 years, the exhibit’s black & white photographs depict the daily life of Latino North Carolinians adapting to and shaping life across our state. Less political in nature, the exhibit seeks to underscore the cultural similarities that exist for everyone today.
Admission is free, and this exhibit on loan from the NC Museum of History, will run through April 9, 2020 in the Center’s gallery at Hunter Library, 176 Central Dr. in Cullowhee.
