The presenter, Bob Pettigrew, recently retired from TRC Companies, Inc. after more than 17 years; He is the former president of Beckwith Electric (22 years) in Largo, FL.
During Mr. Pettigrew's presentation on generators, he will focus on the importance of teamwork in the industry.
Description:This presentation will review the basic concepts of how generators work, the tools developed to analyze faults and how the generator uses protective relays to detect faults and unsafe operating conditions. Generators are a major capital investment to the utility system and undetected faults can cause long and costly outages.
A protective relay today includes many protection functions that operate concurrently to analyze the voltages and currents in the generating unit and to detect faults. Protective relays must be selective, sensitive and fast in order to limit damage to the machine. The various protection functions used in a generator protection system will be discussed, including:
Ground Fault Protection
Phase to Phase Fault Protection
Field Ground Protection
Loss of Field Protection
Unbalanced Current Protection
Reverse Power Protection
Over/Under frequency Protection
Out of Step Protection
Overexcitation Protection
Questions will be encouraged from the audience.
