Description
The School of Music’s Artist-in-Residence Program brings professional string musicians from the Asheville Symphony Orchestra to perform orchestral masterworks with WCU’s woodwind, brass, and percussion students. This program will be conducted by Christopher Confessore, and includes some favorite masterworks from the orchestral repertoire.
Christopher Confessore currently serves as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Brevard (FL) Symphony Orchestra and Resident Conductor and Principal Pops Conductor of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. His schedule as a guest conductor has included appearances with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, Charlotte Symphony, Naples Philharmonic, Sarasota Orchestra, Hartford Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra.
PROGRAM:
Sibelius - Finlandia
Tchaikovsky - Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture
Elgar - Enigma Variations
The second half of the program will include a special presentation by the conductor, describing the interesting origins of the Enigma Variations. Elgar composed each variation as a musical portrait of a friend or colleague. Through portraits projected on a screen, as well as musical examples, the audience will be introduced to each of these characters before the piece is performed in its entirety.
