The Appalachian Studies program provides an opportunity to study the Appalachian region through the social and biological sciences, humanities, culture and applied arts. Students become well equipped in better understanding and promoting regional development. For our purposes:  We support the study of art, writing, music, craftsmanship, literature, history, vocational, education, social work, human services all with intentions of producing an understanding that is supportive of regional pride and identity of the Appalachian people.

The committee will select students who have declared a major/minor in music, with an interest in the traditional music of the Appalachian mountains (including roots and Influences undergraduate minor or graduate concentration within the Appalachian Studies MA). The scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit or potential in the area of music scholarship, with consideration of financial need. Description of Scholarship Essay Requirements: A brief (2-3 page) essay which describes your interests, activities, and goals in traditional music, OR, a one page essay and a performance recording (CD or DVD).

Catch the Spirit of Appalachia, a local non-profit art and heritage organization,  announces it's 2012 creative writing series, "Writing From The Heart," schedule with author and publisher, Amy Ammons Garza. Throughout the coming year, every second Saturday of each month, from 10am until 3pm, the workshops will cover material beneficial in writing short stories, novels, articles;  enhancing skills in advice, personal experience, essays and sketches, inspiration, nostalgia and humor. The goal of Catch the Spirit of Appalachia is to encourage EVERYONE to write it down, putting on paper what matters to them. By the end of the year, in November, Catch the Spirit has a "Holiday Reception" for the CSA Writers, where the writers will be involved in reading their work in a performance for the public.

"Writing from the Heart" means to write the story you want to tell, a story you have to share with the world. It’s probably one of the easiest article types to write in terms of research because you are your research. In this workshop, you will learn how to write something that makes readers cry out, “Hey, that’s me! That’s what I think. That’s how I feel!” and at the same time offer hope and help. The knowledge acquired is something all can use in creative writing. The teacher will ask the writer to strive to have at least one completed work by November this year.

The workshops are held at 29 Regal Avenue in Sylva. Cost is $35 per session--each session stands alone--and are held from 10am until 3pm. The writers are to bring their own lunch.

January 14th—Introduction to "Writing From the Heart"
February 11th—Your Precious Heritage
March 10th—Powerful Beginnings/Endings
April 14th—Writing with a Purpose/Plot
May 12th—Weaving Fiction into Fact
June 9th—The 4-Keys of Pacing
July 14th—Persuade wth Power
August 11th—Selecting and Directing your writings
September 8th—Overview of Writing from the Heart
October 13th–—Run through of the  performance
November —7pm: Holiday CSA's Celebration of the Arts at the Jackson Cty Library

For the 28th year, the Dillsboro Festival of Lights & Luminaries illuminates this mountain village the first two weekends in December.

In an era of electronic gadgetry and LED lights, Dillsboro’s celebration is a throwback. Adapted from a Scandinavian custom of lighting the way for the Christ child, more than 2,500 candles in white bags line the streets.

This year’s dates are Dec. 2-3 and Dec. 9-10. In addition to the luminaries on the streets, the town’s merchant “elves” trim their buildings, many of which date to the 1800s, in traditional white lights.

Once Dillsboro is aglow, carolers fill the streets, musicians stroll through town playing Christmas favorites, and Santa visits with children at Town Hall. Shopkeepers add to the merriment by staying open late and serving coffee, warm cider, hot chocolate and homemade goodies to visitors.

For the second straight year, horse-drawn carriage rides will be available both weekends.

“Folks tell us every year how genuine this event is and how much they enjoy it,” says Julie Spiro, tourism director for Jackson County. “It’s a nice combination of cool winter weather and warm holiday spirit.”

The Festival of Lights & Luminaries begins each evening at dusk and runs until 9 p.m. There is no admission charge and lodging is plentiful with more than half of Jackson’s County guest rooms located in Dillsboro or within a 15-minute drive.

For information, go to www.visitdillsboro.org, or call the Jackson County Visitors Center at (800) 962-1911.

The 24th annual Hard Candy Christmas Fine Art and Craft Show is Nov. 25-26, featuring more than 110 artisans hand-picked by show organizer and veteran crafter Doris
Hunter.

Hunter spends the year visiting shows throughout the Southeast, seeking talented crafters who add a special touch to her show, which gets its name from a simpler era when folks enjoyed the season with stockings of hard candy and gifts made by hand.

This two-day event, the largest holiday arts and crafts show in Western North Carolina, features a variety of hand-made items from basket weavers, wood carvers, quilters, silversmiths, potters, furniture makers, blacksmiths, glass blowers and doll makers.

Holiday items available include candles, ornaments, trees, wreaths and peanut brittle.

This year's featured artist is Jean Littlejohn of Clyde, N.C., who creates limited-edition holiday crafts from the 1800s. Her German-style candy containers are sculpted of papier mache. Littlejohn has won numerous awards and been featured in several crafts magazines.

The show has grown so much that a dozen artisans will be displaying outside the arena.

Show hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Admission is $3 per person, with children under age 12 admitted free. Parking is also free.

For show info, call Doris Hunter at (828) 524-3405, or visit: www.mountainartisans.net. For info on dining and lodging, call the Jackson County Visitors Center at (800) 962-1911.
